New Stoke-on-Trent bus station underway

Stoke-on-Trent’s new bus station is well on its way after excavation work to create the foundations started on the 30 January.

Over the next 10 weeks VINCI Construction UK, the project’s principal contractor, will carry out extensive earth excavations to prepare a platform to install 8m deep concrete piles, needed to support the building.

A total of 3600m3 of concrete and 245 tonnes of steel will be used to construct the bus station.
When completed, the roof area of the bus concourse will cover about half the size of a football pitch and the apron to the bus car-park will be twice that size.

The scheme is being led by Stoke-on-Trent City Council as part of a £1.6bn transformation of the city centre.

Mark Thomas, regional director, VINCI Construction UK Building Division – North, said:
“The ground-breaking ceremony is an exciting event for Stoke-on-Trent and VINCI Construction UK. It represents the start of a challenging and significant redevelopment of the new city centre bus facility and will open the gates to the £350m redevelopment of Stoke”.

Following completion of the foundations, work will commence on the accommodation building for the bus drivers and the construction of the stations main bus concourse.

The new bus station is the first phase of the £350m new shopping and leisure complex in Stoke-on-Trent which is due to be completed this autumn.
